CASPER & GAMBINI’S – LAGOS RESTAURANT REVIEW

Long time no restaurant review, but now I’m back! I got some recommendations to try out Caspers and Gambini’s in VI off Adeola Odeku-you can’t miss it! I went there twice within a week…is that how good it was?. Find out as you read along-very robust review! You can watch my time there by clicking HERE and HERE
The first time  I went to Caspers and Gambini’s was with my husband and son, we just wanted to try something new and it was an interesting experience. My first observation was that it was filled with a lot of caucasians, so I started wondering if it’s only oyibo food they serve.
I met my former roommate  from Igbinedion University there, she was having lunch with friends and it was so nice to catch up! The last time I saw her was at my wedding in 2014! We met other people- while we were eating, Tito kept winking and making faces at this beautiful lady on the other table and it turns out she (and her brother) were good friends of my husband! It looked like we were having a mini reunion.

AMBIANCE & HOSPITALITY
I love the feel, the decor was very contemporary and quite rustic. A lot of blacks and wooden surfaces, plus I loved that it was well lit! Well lit spaces are perfect for taking great photos! They had tables outside for those who enjoy the outdoors but Nigeria is HOT and NO ELECTRICITY so I have no business eating outdoors, Air Condition please!

As for hospitality I would say it was the average, we kept having to remind the waiters to take our order. We noticed other tables had the complimentary platter of bread and we didn’t so I requested for it-apparently they forgot to give us. Imagine if I didn’t know it was complimentary?

When my food arrived, it came in a chipped plate, I don’t eat with chipped plates in my house, so why should I eat with chipped plates here when I’m paying so much?

WHAT WE HAD

BBQ Wings – N2100 – It was fried chicken wings coated with a delicious sauce. It was so good that I forgot to find out what it was coated with exactly but by tasting it, I can say it was barbecue sauce and some honey, it also had a slight tangy taste i liked.

Crunchy Seafood Basket – N3900 – It was about 5 fried and coated big prawns with some calamari, with a slice of lime. I enjoyed it a lot.

Chicken Guacamole BurgerN3800 – Grilled Chicken breast topped with melted cheddar, caramelised onion and red pepper, lettuce, tomato, lime cilantro and guacamole, served with french fries. Bobo had this and for the first time ever couldn’t finish a burger! Maybe because we already had the BBW Wings and seafood basket.

Chicken QuesadillaN3700 – Grilled chilli chicken breast strips, three cheese blend, roasted peppers,  mushroom and coriander tomato sauce melted in grilled tortillas, served with sour cream, guacamole, and tomato salsa and french fries. This was my main and I liked it a lot, I got it because I saw the photo on the menu-it was just calling my name…Eat me, Eat me!

Banoffee Pie – N1300 – Crunchy biscuit base covered with a thick layer of toffee and slices of fresh caramelised banana topped with fluffy banana cream. Hmmm….I’m not much of a desert person and I only tasted this. I wouldn’t buy it again.

Crunchy Profiterol – N1800 – Crunchy and fluffy puffs filled with smooth vanilla cream and covered with chocolate drizzle . I like this one, and I had just one of the puffs-it was very sweet! Yomi liked it a lot.
Kiwi-Apple SmoothieN1300 –  This was what I had to drink. I’ve had a thing for Kiwi’s lately! I should replicate this in my kitchen, Kiwi and Apple go so well together!

Tito was not left out!

A tired out Tito after eating too much

The second time I went there I was to meet up with a blogger, unfortunately she couldn’t get there in time and I had to leave because of traffic. However I ordered something delicious and they remembered to serve my complimentary bread. It was hot and you know how nice it is when you put butter in it…it just melts beautifully. The dip was also very tasty.

1 Suya Mixed GrillN3000 – It was Chicken suya and it was so yummy! So tender and one of the best chicken suya’s I’ve had. It finished too quickly! It came with fries and a coleslaw. I finished it all, except tomatoes…I no sabi chop uncooked tomatoes.
Chicken Suya

Delicious chicken suya!

1 Mango SmoothieN1300 – Mango juice is one of my favourites and I enjoyed it a lot! I like thick juices and it did not disappoint.

DAMAGE DONE
This place is not cheap, and definitely not for everyday unless you are well loaded. When I saw the bill the first time I gulped and I felt a bit sad because this is easily someone’s salary oh and we know how hard the times are in Nigeria. However, I decided this was a treat so… let’s indulge a bit. We had starters, main and dessert. This is not typically how we eat. If we had stuck to just mains it would have cost a lot less.
The second time I went there I spent no more than 5,000 naira, which I think is decent.
I no dey chop raw tomatoes
Hand sanitisers because you need to stay safe!

I hope these reviews help you out when looking for restaurants to try out and if you like more of this please leave a comment. Do you have somewhere nice you’ve tried lately? I need to catch up!

  5. Hi,

Try Jade palace, its a chinese restaurant on Isaac John in G.R.A if you want great chinese food, a really nice ambience and a classy location. If you are going for a more party and loud music but great food try La Mango on Adekunle Fajuyi way GRA.(service in la mango can be sucky atimes though). You can also try Orchid Bistro on Isaac John, although its a very tiny location. Hope this works and happy birthday in advance to your hubs
