Kitchen Skills to Learn Before You Get Married

Let me just say it now — marriage is sweet, but hunger is wicked! 😂
Before you walk down the aisle, pack your Asoebi, collect your gele, and practice your dance steps, but abeg… don’t forget to pack your kitchen skills too.

Because one day, somebody will ask you:
“Babe, what’s for dinner?” 👀
And if you’re not ready, wahala go gas!

Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here are 7 essential kitchen skills to master before you get married — no stress, no pressure, just vibes and good food.

1. Master the Basics 🍚🍳

Before you start dreaming of gourmet dishes, learn how to survive the basics:

  • Boil rice without soaking the whole kitchen 😭
  • Fry eggs without burning them 🥲
  • Make pasta that isn’t one sticky, sad lump

Trust me, knowing these simple things will save you on days when hunger strikes and there’s no time for “chef experiments.”

2. Sauce is Life! 🍲

Let’s be honest, in Nigerian homes, stew is a love language. You need at least one signature sauce in your skill set — tomato stew, curry sauce, pepper sauce, anything!

Because one day, someone will ask:
“Babe, what are we eating?”
And you cannot answer “I don’t know” 😅.

3. Soup & Swallow 101 🥘

If you’re Nigerian, you already know — soups are serious business. Whether it’s Egusi, Ogbono, Okra, Afang, or Edikaikong, pick one and learn it well.

And abeg, swallow should not double as cement 😭. We want soft, smooth, and fluffy, not “construction material.”

4. Knife Skills Matter 🔪

Listen, you can’t be “slicing vibes” in the kitchen. If you want to cook like a pro:

  • Learn to chop onions without crying
  • Slice vegetables evenly
  • Cut meat like someone who knows what they’re doing

Sharp knife = sharp life 😎.

5. Quick Fix Meals = Sanity Saver

Marriage will test your patience, but hunger will test it faster 😂.
Learn 2–3 fast but tasty meals for those busy days:

  • Yam porridge
  • Stir fry noodles or pasta
  • Homemade shawarma 🌯

You’ll thank yourself on nights when you come home tired and need something quick but delicious.

6. Meal Planning & Prep is Key 🥶

If there’s one kitchen skill that will save you stress, time, and energy, it’s meal prepping.

  • Chop, label, and store ingredients in advance
  • Freeze soups and sauces
  • Always have “emergency meals” ready

Future you will thank present you when it’s 10 pm, you’re hungry, and dinner is ready in minutes. Use this Meal Planner called THERE IS FOOD AT HOME , it has a FOOD TIME TABLE and a recipe for each meal on the food timetable. Click HERE to DOWNLOAD it.

7. Presentation is Everything 🍽️

Even garri and groundnut can look like a five-star meal if you plate it right. Food tastes better when it looks good — it’s a fact! 😎

Sprinkle a little garnish, use clean plates, and arrange your meal like you’re serving a king or queen (because you are!).

Marriage will test your patience… but don’t let the kitchen test it too 😅.
