HOW TO INCREASE YOUR BREAST MILK SUPPLY NATURALLY

M
any Nigerian moms worry about low milk supply, especially in the first few weeks of breastfeeding. If you’re wondering, “Am I producing enough milk for my baby?”, the answer is most likely, YES! The more you breastfeed, the more milk your body makes. But if you’re struggling, there are natural ways to boost supply.

1. Eat More Nigerian Milk-Boosting Foods

Your diet plays a huge role in milk production. Try these Nigerian lactation-friendly foods:
🥣 Pap (Ogi) – A fermented corn porridge that helps increase milk flow. Take it with milk and groundnuts for extra nutrients.
🥜 Tiger Nuts & Dates Smoothie – Naturally sweet and packed with energy.
🥬 Ugu (Fluted Pumpkin Leaves) Soup – Rich in iron and great for postpartum recovery.
🌰 Groundnuts & Coconut – High in healthy fats and protein, both essential for milk production.
🍠 Sweet Potatoes – Provides energy to keep up with night feeds.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Breast milk is 80% water, so staying hydrated is key! Try:
💧 At least 8 glasses of water daily
🥛 Warm zobo drink (without caffeine)
🍵 Moringa or fenugreek tea (both are natural galactagogues that help increase milk supply)

3. Breastfeed More Often

Milk production works on a supply-and-demand basis. The more you nurse, the more milk you make.

  • Feed on demand – Don’t wait for a strict schedule.
  • Empty one breast before switching – This ensures baby gets nutrient-rich hindmilk.
  • Use breast compression – Gently squeeze your breast while nursing to encourage milk flow.

4. Reduce Stress & Get More Rest

Stress can slow down milk production. Try:
🧘🏽‍♀️ Deep breathing exercises
😴 Short naps when baby sleeps
💆🏽‍♀️ Let others help with cooking & chores
