HOW I MAKE SURE THERE'S ALWAYS FOOD AT HOME

Feeding a growing family or even just yourself can sometimes feel like a daunting task, especially when faced with busy schedules and unexpected cravings. However, with a bit of strategic planning and organization, you can ensure that your pantry is always stocked with the essentials to whip up satisfying meals. Here’s how you can master the art of meal planning and keep your kitchen ready for any culinary adventure.

Step 1: Assess Your Needs and Preferences

Before diving into meal planning, take some time to assess your family’s dietary needs and preferences. Consider any food allergies or dietary restrictions that may affect meal choices. Also, think about the types of meals your family enjoys and the ingredients commonly used in these dishes. This will guide your grocery shopping and ensure that you have the right staples on hand.

Step 2: Create a Weekly Meal Plan

Meal planning is key to maintaining a well-stocked pantry. Start by creating a weekly meal plan aka Food Time Table ( Download a 6 month Food Time Table HERE) that outlines breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for each day. This doesn’t mean you have to plan every single meal down to the last detail; rather, aim to have a general idea of what you’ll be cooking each day. Take into account any leftovers or meals that can be repurposed for future lunches or dinners to minimize waste.

Step 3: Make a Shopping List

Once you have your meal plan, make a detailed shopping list based on the recipes you’ve chosen for the week. Check your pantry and fridge to see which ingredients you already have and which ones you need to buy. Organize your list by categories (e.g., produce, dairy, pantry staples) to streamline your shopping trip and ensure you don’t forget anything.

Step 4: Stock Up on Staples

Certain pantry staples are versatile and can be used in a wide variety of recipes. Make sure to always have these basics on hand:

  • Grains: Rice, pasta, oats
  • Legumes: Beans, lentils, chickpeas
  • Canned Goods: Tomatoes, beans, tuna, corned beef, sardine, milk, tin tomatoes
  • Condiments and Sauces: Olive oil, vinegar, soy sauce, pasta sauce, shito, ketchup, syrups
  • Herbs and Spices: Salt, pepper, garlic powder, chilli powder, cinnamon, pepper soup spice,
  • Baking Essentials: Flour, sugar, baking powder, yeast, baking soda, nutmeg

Having these staples readily available allows you to whip up a quick meal even when you haven’t had time to go grocery shopping.

Step 5: Incorporate Variety

While having staples is important, don’t forget to incorporate variety into your meals. Experiment with different cuisines, flavors, and ingredients to keep meals interesting and enjoyable. Consider trying new recipes or swapping out ingredients in familiar dishes to keep things fresh.

Step 6: Organize Your Pantry

Keep your pantry organized to easily see what you have and avoid buying duplicate items. Use clear containers or bins for grains, legumes, and snacks, and label everything to keep track of expiration dates. Arrange items so that older products are used first to prevent waste.

Step 7: Plan for Leftovers

Cooking larger batches and planning for leftovers can save time and ensure there’s always something to eat. Use leftover proteins, grains, and vegetables to create new dishes like stir-fries, soups, or salads for the next day’s lunch or dinner.

Step 8: Stay Flexible

Lastly, remember that meal planning is a guide, not a rigid rule. Be flexible and willing to adapt based on changes in schedule, unexpected events, or simply a craving for something different. Keep a few emergency meals on hand,  for those days when cooking just isn’t feasible.

By following these steps and making meal planning a regular part of your routine, you can ensure that your pantry is always stocked with delicious and nutritious options to feed your family or yourself. Not only will you save time and money, but you’ll also enjoy the satisfaction of preparing meals that nourish and delight.
