STOP THROWING FOOD AWAY; DO THESE INSTEAD!

Food waste is a major problem in many parts of the world. Not only does it waste precious resources, but it also contributes to environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reduce the amount of food that ends up in the garbage, it is necessary to reconsider your shopping, cooking, and eating habits- here are some tips for fighting food waste:

Plan your meals: The most effective weapon in the fight against food waste is to plan out your meals for the week ahead and make a shopping list based on what you need. This can help you avoid overbuying and reduce the amount of food that goes to waste. Never go to the grocery without checking the fridge first to see what's there, then come up with menu ideas based on those ingredients. My family uses this Menu Plan, and it has helped 100%, you can download it HERE

Buy only what you need: Be mindful when shopping for groceries and only buy what you need. Avoid impulse buying and purchasing items that you might not use. Make sure you eat properly before going food shopping...I learned the HARD WAY!

Store food properly: Proper storage of food can help to extend its shelf life. Store fruits and vegetables separately and make sure they are stored in the correct temperature and humidity levels. This can help to reduce spoilage and extend their shelf life.

Use leftovers creatively: Leftovers can be transformed into new meals and snacks. Get creative with your cooking and use leftover vegetables in soups or stir-fries, or use leftover rice to make a tasty rice pudding. left over white yam can easily become amaro with a few more ingredients.

Freeze food: Freezing food can help to extend its shelf life. Freeze items such as bread, meat, and vegetables that you might not use right away. There are some soups that freeze really well, like Stews, Banga Soup, Ogbono Soups, maximise them.

Donate food: If you have excess food that you can't use, consider donating it to a local food bank or shelter or the needy around you -there are so many people going without, yet so much wastage in our homes. This can help to reduce food waste while also helping those in need.

Compost food scraps: Composting can help to reduce the amount of food waste that goes to landfill. Consider starting a compost bin for your food scraps and yard waste.By following these tips, you can help to fight food waste and make a positive impact on the environment.
