Mothers and Children in Kaduna State joined other states such as Abia, Oyo, Ogun, and Calabar to benefit from the kindness of the MTN Foundation Yellow Heart Initiative. Activities in Kaduna kicked off with a forum to educate mothers on nutritional tips for early pregnancy, diet, stress avoidance, drugs and do's and don’ts to protect from unseen challenges that can impact the health of mothers and their babies.
MTN Nigeria’s General Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Mr. Ikenna Ikeme, commended parents who were present at the forum. “The development of any nation is directly related to the health of each and every citizen” and MTN Foundation is very sensitive to the challenges within our society. This is why we go the extra mile to make the lives of citizens brighter”, he said.
Speaking on the experience of mothers and babies in the state, Ms. Fatima Shehu, a midwife at the Yusuf Dan Tsofo Hospital, in Kaduna State, said that the initiative is laudable and MTN Foundation deserves huge praise for impacting the lives of mothers and babies in Northern states and in Kaduna precisely. According to her, “Most of our women do not like going to the hospital to give birth as they prefer giving birth at home without considering the risks associated with home births. Thanks to MTN Foundation for introducing this initiative to further enlighten these mothers and provide them with the opportunity to voice out concerns and ask relevant questions relating to the challenges they currently face.
Activities to launch the Yellow Heart initiative in the state culminated with the Walk for Life, a walk aimed at creating awareness for the scourge of maternal and infant mortality.
MTN Foundation has partnered with the Ministry of Health on multiple projects related to this cause. These include the Maternal Ward Support Project which has facilitated the renovation of 24 maternal wards across the country, the ‘Y’ello Doctor’ project which deployed six mobile clinics supporting the medical needs of mothers and children commissioned in six states and many others.
Apart from Kaduna, five other states namely Ogun, Oyo, Abia, Niger and Cross-River have been selected for the first leg of MTN Foundation Yellow Heart initiative.
