As part of its ongoing
efforts to encourage Lagos residents to restore, share and protect those values
that made Lagos great, Spirit of Lagos yesterday honoured some Lagos residents
and organizations who have shown exemplary conducts in the state under its
Citizens Day Awards 2015.
The awards which came under
four different categories namely: Business/Corporate Award Category, Public
Service Award Category, Individual/Community Award Category and Spirit of Lagos
School Challenge according to Olaniyi Omotoso, the Spirit of Lagos Project
Director, were designed by the Lagos State Government to acknowledge Lagos
citizens who have gone above and beyond the call of duty with neither
expectation of reward nor clamour for the spotlight.
“They simply model good citizenship,
dedication to service, and commitment to the common good” Omotoso said saying
that the event would be held on May 27 of every year, which is also the
anniversary of the creation of Lagos State.
Under the Business/Corporate
Award Category, three sub-categories were keenly contested for and this
includes Small Company Category (Small & Medium
Scale Enterprises which was won by Hotel Lawa, a hospitality business concern
located in the Igbosere area of Lagos. The Hotel was specially recognized for
supporting the upliftment of diverse culture, custom, tradition, ideals and
core values of the host community. Besides, it is also recognized for providing
sponsorship for activities and events within its host community.
Lagbus Asset Management
Limited won the Medium Company Category
(emerging corporate). It was recognized for providing youth mentoring
through its trainee programmes, internship and capacity enhamncement programs
in transportation, engineering, logistics and marketing.
The UBA Foundation Plc won
the Large Company Category (Blue Chip/ Multinationals) for its annual awareness
for prostrate cancer including a 6 km race, aerobic session and a novelty
soccer match and free screenings.
For the Public Service
Awards Category, Ganiyu Isaiah Aliyu, a staff in the Health and Safety division
of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) won the Rising Star Award. He
was recognized for significantly contributing to the drastic reduction in
health hazards and accidents recorded by highway operation staff.
Other winners under this
category are Muideen Olusegun Bisiriyu, a Director of Education under the Lagos
State
Ministry of
Education won the Exemplary Conduct Award while
Mrs. Helen Osunbor the Vice Principal (Administration), Oriwu Senior
Model College, Ikorodu, who has taught in many schools in Lagos State for 32
years and pioneered the Tomato Plantation and ornamental garden in her school,
won the Role Model Award (Lifetime Achievement).
The Individual/Community
Awards Category recognizes services by an individual and or community that have
demonstrated outstanding commitment through direct development of charitable
programmes, volunteering and leadership in philanthropy. There are four
sub-categories under this category, viz: Exceptional Community, Community
Development, Exceptional Young Lagosian and Role Mode Award (Lifetime
Achievement)
Under the Exceptional
Community Sub-Categories, Elepete LCDA, Ikorodu West clinched the award. The
LCDA which was founded in March 2009, was recognized for the purchase of a
transformer 50 spans of high-tension cables and low tensions cables to improve
electricity in the community.
Bolajoko Fadipe, founder of
Food Clique, a support initiative that provides intervention meals for over
3,000 Lagosians monthly won the Community Development award while Christiana
Tolu Ebun, who has been providing scholarship to youth in Bariga and Shomolu as
well as organizes free career seminars among many others, won the Exceptional
Young Lagosian Award.
The Role Model Award was won
by Mr. Tunji Ola for his exemplary leadership which transformed the River
Valley Estate in Ojodu-Berger from an unkempt environment to an ‘Eldorado’ with
all Street paved, community electrical system upgraded.
Government Junior and Senior
Colleges, Ketu, Epe, emerged the 2015 Schools’ Challenge. The team was
recognized for successfully instituting a project whose central theme is
developing a positive attitude to communal (government) property by imbibing a
sense of ownership of the property. Their aim was to minimize losses arising
from damaged school furniture and thereby save money for the school.
