It's all over the news, it's on the headlines, Mandela is everywhere! Did you watch the Memorial Service? It gives me goosebumps just seeing how much loved and respected he was, if you didn't see that in his lifetime you would have seen it during the memorial service, it was a memorable celebration of his life! Here are moments that I think stood out during the event:
1. The Love Around: You could see people showing how much they loved Mandela, such outpouring of support for the great Madiba! See pictures
2. Obama's moving Eulogy for Mandela: I always enjoy listening to Obama's speeches, just because he carries those words well and he knows just how to touch hearts with words. Here's an excerpt, “Mandela taught us the power of action, but he also taught us the power of ideas; the importance of reason and arguments; the need to study not only those who you agree with, but also those who you don’t agree with,” he further said, " To the people of South Africa -- people of every race and walk of life -- the world thanks you for sharing Nelson Mandela with us"
3. That EPIC Selfie: Ha ha ha. There was the superpower selfie taken by Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt with a smiling Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron ! Selfie of Life! Michelle Obama didn't seem too pleased, judging from the look on her face. Was this an appropriate time to take a selfie? You be the judge. All I'm saying is, my next selfie must be with movers and shakers of the world. I would like a selfie with Oprah and Obama :D
4. Obama's Handshake With Raul Castro: Obama did shake hands with a lot of world leaders, but what stood out was his handshake with Cuban leader Raul Castro and his double cheek-kiss with Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil. The media have speculated that the handshake was a was a symbol amicability between America’s Cold War enemy. However, Obama’s advisor Ben Rhodes says it was just a friendly gesture. Also, the U.S. and Brazil have not had a good relationship since reports came to light about America’s alleged spying on Brazil communications. "Sometimes a handshake is just a handshake, but when the leader of the free world shakes the bloody hand of a ruthless dictator like Raul Castro, it becomes a propaganda coup for the tyrant," said Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Cuban-American congresswoman.
5. South African President Booed: Jacob Zuma, the president of South Africa, did not get the fantastic reception that Obama received. Zuma was indeed greeted with boos and jeers as he took the stage to give his speech in commemorating Madiba. By the time he got round to giving his speech, the stadium was all but empty! Oh dear!
